Jobs are like relationships: some are long and meaningful, some are just brief flings, others are bitter and regretful but how do you catch the eye of that certain someone?
Stand out from the crowd
Recruiters and hiring managers see hundreds of applicants so don’t be afraid to stand out and be unique. We strongly suggest putting industry relevant information on your cv, perhaps highlighting key buzz words in bold or put them in a key skills section to draw that eye over to your name. Like any new date or love interest, they will google /social media you so please no pictures of you with a traffic cone on your head during a night out!
Get to know each other
Like any first date, get familiar with who you will be meeting, do your research! There is nothing worse than meeting someone and putting your foot in it because you don’t know anything about them. Knowledge is power! Try and socialise within the same social groups or on the same communities online. Contribute where you can and ask meaningful questions and you will be a lasting memory.
Honesty is the best policy!
With any new life changing partnership honesty is key. There’s nothing worse than claiming something in a conversation or on your CV and then being asked to do a task when you can’t. Be honest from the start and make the effort to impress. Put your best foot forward, shine your shoes, do your hair a little different and pull out your best bib and tucker.
How long do you leave it before calling them?
Don’t want to look too keen? Do they like you? Are they the one? These are perfectly normal questions when playing dating career game. After your interview send a follow up email saying how much you enjoyed meeting them and that you are really interested in meeting them again. After a week if there is still no contact then perhaps put in the call, just the one though because you don’t want to look too keen. If you don’t hear after a couple of weeks it may be time to accept that perhaps it was not the one.
Don’t let it knock your confidence though, the one is out there somewhere so don’t just take some random rebound position. The right role is out there for you and you have to kiss a few frogs before you find your prince!
